Once Upon a time in Damas
Damas, la ville mémoire, telle qu’elle était en 2006. Nostalgie d’une ville, creuset millénaire de la spiritualité. Terre d’élection des trois religions monothéistes, judaïsme, christianisme, islam. Refuge des saints et des prophètes. Par delà bien des conflits, elle a tenté de maintenir une cohésion entre toutes ses communautés religieuses. Dans les méandres de cette vieille cité (plus de cinq mille ans) se chevauchaient les restes des civilisations assyrienne, babylonienne, perse, romaine, byzantine, arabe, ottomane…Depuis ces images que savons-nous de ce qui a été épargné de l’irrépressible barbarie humaine ?
Damascus, just as it was in 2006; age-old hub of spirituality, refuge of saints and prophets and the chosen place of three monotheistic religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Despite numerous conflicts it has tried hard to maintain cohesion between the different religious communities. Meandering around this ancient city that dates back over 5000 years one can see the vestiges of Assyrian, Babylonian, Persian, Roman, Byzantine, Arab and Ottoman civilisations. Is it possible to tell from these photos what was spared from the irrepressible human barbarism?
